The International Labor Organization Conference was held in Geneva, Switzerland on June 14th. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was invited to this conference, where she answered questions. Reporters asked her a series of questions regarding the issue of Rohingya versus Rakhine that is currently occurring in Burma.

To these questions, she answered that keeping law and order is of the utmost importance. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi insisted that this issue must “be handled with delicacy and sensitivity.” She also calls for “the cooperation of all people concerned to regain the peace.” When asked whether Rohingyas were considered as citizens in Burma, Daw Suu answered, “We have to be very clear about what the laws of citizenship are and who are entitled to them. All those who are entitled to citizenship should be treated as full citizens deserving all rights that must be given to them.”

The clashes between Rohingya and Rakhine, along with the increase in Rohingya immigration, happened as the result of the lack of border control. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi proposes a solution to this issue by stating that the country of Burma needs to clarify, as well as emphasize, citizenship laws, and improve policing of the border between the Rakhine State and Bangladesh. Both countries must take part in keeping their borders safe. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi says, “One of the greatest problems comes from the fear on both sides of the border…, that there will be illegal immigrants crossing all the time. We need more responsible border vigilance.”
